Message from the Chancellor

Appalachian seal

Last week, some of the world’s most brilliant minds in energy policies, practices and sustainability gathered here for the 6th Appalachian Energy Summit. Fittingly, the summit opened just hours after our student-led solar vehicle team took second place at the international Formula Sun Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

The success the energy summit has had in reducing and stabilizing the University of North Carolina system’s average annual energy expenditures is significant and has had a real impact.

To date, UNC campuses – together with industry partners – have avoided more than $499 million in utility costs. And, we are on track to continue this momentum. We expect to avoid energy costs to the tune of $1 billion by 2020 and $2 billion by the year 2025.

This link takes you to a summit overview and the profiles of three impressive student projects that were highlighted during the event.

Students like these, who are invited to attend the summit, have an incredible opportunity to learn from and network with the best minds in their fields of interest. In turn, their mentors – academics and industry pioneers – are positioning these young learners to become leaders in sustainability thought and practice.

This is a great time to be a Mountaineer.

At Appalachian, we put students first, always, and together we are building a bright future. Ultimately, the reason Appalachian’s stellar faculty and staff come to work every day is to realize this vision.
