As we prepare to begin another academic year, the Student Legal Clinic and Off-Campus Student Services are busy getting ready to meet, greet, and assist our new and returning students. These two programs, housed in the Dean of Students suite on the 3rd floor of the Student Union, are amongst the many departments within the Division of Student Affairs that provide out-of-classroom resources to facilitate a successful experience for Appalachian State students.
The Student Legal Clinic provides advice, information, and referrals to App State students through individual consultations with a licensed attorney. Consultations are free, confidential, and easy to schedule by calling (828) 262-8284 or stopping by Suite 324, Plemmons Student Union.
Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS) maintains several websites (offcampus.appstate.edu and offcampushousing.appstate.edu) to help students find rental housing in Boone and access other campus and community resources when living off-campus. OCSS also networks with local landlords, provides educational and social programming for students living off-campus or planning to move off-campus, hosts the ASU Housing Fair early in the spring semester, and outreaches to off-campus students each fall through House Calls. This year, House Calls is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, September 6, during Safety Week. Over 60 App State faculty and staff volunteers will be knocking on approximately 2,000 off-campus student doors to welcome students and provide important safety information to them. We estimate that we reach over 5,000 students (based on the number living in each apartment we visit) through this event. While we can’t directly reach every student living off-campus, through this event and other initiatives, OCSS lays the groundwork to create a connected, engaged, and informed community of off-campus students.
