Free Money for Study Abroad: Gilman International Scholarship

Applications for the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship are open now. Students can receive up to $5,000 to support their education abroad through this scholarship, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

The Gilman program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions they reach. Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions planning to study abroad or participate in a career-oriented international internship abroad for academic credit are eligible to apply. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies, making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.

The Office of International Education and Development (OIED) assists students in applying for national and prestigious scholarships, such as the Benjamin Gilman Scholarship, which are designed for study abroad experiences. Dedicated Appalachian staff and faculty read essay drafts and provide constructive comments to students; OIED staff meet students in person to talk about their study abroad plans, the structure and content of essays, provide follow-on project support, and technical support when submitting applications.

The scholarship application deadline for students participating in Spring and Summer 2018 programs is October 10, 2017. Encourage your students to contact OIED and receive help today! It is never too early to start planning!
