A MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR | February 3, 2017
Last month, I had the pleasure of addressing our faculty and staff, commending them on the remarkable work they do every day to help the students you have entrusted to us succeed, here on campus and in their chosen careers.
As I was preparing my remarks, I scrolled through our university website – appstate.edu – and noted these news headlines:
Appalachian students give over 1,200 combined hours of local community service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and legacy
Environmental science major Tara Early ’16 takes first place in a research poster competition sponsored by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry
Appalachian one of 8 UNC institutions to host Laboratory School, will partner with Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools to advance literacy
Appalachian professors at Northeastern University in Shenyang, China developing instructional materials critical for the many Chinese aiming to study, work abroad and/or publish scholarship in English
Community engagement. Student research. Global learning. Each of these initiatives is a priority in Appalachian’s Strategic Plan (2014-19) and integral to our students’ Appalachian Experience and subsequent successful integration into society. It appears we are succeeding: a recent study showed that after graduation, nearly 85 percent of our 2014-15 undergraduate and just under 100 percent of our graduate alumni are either employed or enrolled in an institution of post-secondary education.
Feedback from employers indicates they appreciate our graduates’ abilities to think critically, build relationships and communicate effectively.
We’re proud of these numbers and our students’ success in the workplace. We will continue our best efforts to prepare our students to be leaders – creative problem solvers who approach challenges with the ability to think in an interdisciplinary manner. Thank you for choosing Appalachian and for allowing us to educate and influence tomorrow’s productive and conscientious global citizens.

At Appalachian, we put students first, always, and together we are building a bright future. Ultimately, the reason Appalachian’s stellar faculty and staff come to work every day is to realize this vision.
